According to Web of Science, he has published 477 papers (32,760 citations with an h-index of 97),
Projects and Research
His research activities focus on the relationship between sequence, three-dimensional structure, evolution and function of RNA molecules. The goal is to understand RNA evolution and the ongoing interaction between sequence changes and RNA structure/activity. Through comparative crystallographic and bioinformatics approaches, he studied RNA folding and biological functions. To this end, he introduced the "Leontis-Westhof" RNA base pair nomenclature to annotate all types of base pairs in nucleic acids, and in 2010 he launched RNA-Puzzles, an international competition to evaluate blind predictions of 3D RNA structure. The project is part of an ongoing effort to extract maximum information from structure-anchored comparative sequence analysis. Because sequence alignment and 3D assembly of RNA modules have enabled me to predict large catalytic RNAs, such as those of group I introns and RNaseP, he hopes to continue my research along these lines. Indeed, RNA sequence alignments are extremely rich; they allow the identification of conserved helix lengths, unpaired regions, anchor points, conserved residues, semi-conserved residues, concatenated regions, RNA modules and conserved hairpins, conserved or exchanged non-Watson-Crick pairs, as well as key structural residues (e.g., U-turns). The project will include (1) development of methods and tools for generating structure comparisons, i.e., experimental structure-based comparisons, and (2) automation of the overall process.
